What is a backup policy

We’re rolling out a new backup and restore experience for a limited number of customers on the Enterprise plan through an open beta program.

Backup and restore isn’t available in the Atlassian Government environment.

A backup policy is a set of rules that you define to protect your Atlassian data. This includes:

  • What app to back up

  • What data to back up

  • When and how often to run a backup, and

  • Where do you want to store your backups

How do backup policies work

When you create a backup policy, you can:

  • assign an app to back up

  • select entities

  • set a schedule

  • select a storage location for your data.

You can store backups in an Atlassian storage or your organization’s Amazon S3 bucket. While a connection to the Atlassian storage isn’t needed, you need to connect your Amazon S3 bucket to your Atlassian organization. Once connected, you can store backups for as long as you want but these backups can be restored for up to 30 days.

You can assign a single app to 2 policies. This means you can choose to back up a product in Atlassian storage through one policy and to your Amazon S3 bucket through another policy.

You can run backups once or schedule daily or weekly. We provide you with a time slot when your backups will run. Because of concurrency limitations, you can’t select a time of your choice.
